For the second time in my life, I’m leaving my homeland of Canada behind for our friends south of the 49th parallel. When I was 23 years old, having just finished university, I moved out of my parents house and accepted a job in Hartford, CT, 3000 kms from my prairie Canadian home.
It was a great experience. I love the US. They have so many things figured out down there. You can buy beer at almost any gas station or grocery store, they’re absolutely obsessed with sports (though they need some hockey-fan lessons), and people are passionate about what they believe in. Obviously this can lead to many of their downfalls, but overall, I think having passion is important.
Leading up to this move has been especially difficult because I’m leaving behind a business I started six years ago. Most people in my generation don’t stay in a job or role for more than six years, but when it’s your own company, you and everyone else thinks you’ll be there forever. We had a good run with the company and in no way was it a failure. Profitable every year, growth every year, but my sister (business partner) and I were both getting the feeling that we were tired and were looking for some new challenges. She’s going to continue to run the business and manage our team, and I’m excited to hear updates!
The consulting life and work has been a subject of intrigue for me over the past couple years as I’ve been able to witness friends take on the challenging role. Travel, tough problems, short-term projects, and ever-changing work with really smart people is what drew me in. When the opportunity, through a recruiter, came up to apply for a role based in New York City, I figured – why not check it out? Five interviews later over the course of two weeks and I all of a sudden had an offer letter and a big decision to make.
Because Danielle also had visions of pursuing something else and she loved the idea of the consulting life and thought it would be a great opportunity for me, that’s the decision that was made.
So a new chapter begins. I’m excited to use this blog as a platform to journal (i.e. get thoughts out of my head) and to share experiences of travel, consulting, cooking food, life in New York City, and restaurant reviews in NYC.
At least that’s the plan for now. If you’re interested in following along, toss your name and email in the form on the right side of this page, and blog posts will be delivered right to your inbox!
